Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion was created from the association "Village Titan" in 1987 by an agreement with Ecole des Beaux Arts de Marseille.

This agreement created the framework for vocational training which initially allowed the young trainees from La Reunion, and the islands in the Indian Ocean, to prepare for the entrance exam in their first or second year for the art schools in Marseille, Montpellier and Toulouse.

This initiative was immediately successful and has resulted in:

• Firstly, graduates and non-graduates of the island to access higher education in fine arts, to obtain qualifications, to occupy their rightful place in La Réunion or in cities and countries elsewhere in the world in the fields of fine arts or arts education.

• Secondly, to show the full expression of political will shared by the local communities on the island enabling the Ministry of Culture to grant approval for the first year of Fine Arts in La Réunion in September 1991.

Ecole d'Art de La Reunion has thus become a partnership of the State, the Region, the Department, the City of Port and the Consular Chambers. However, the scientific and academic framework of the school is under the pedagogical control of the Plastic Arts Delegation within the Ministry of Culture.

In 1992, Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion received approval for courses in 2nd year of Fine Arts. Approved by the School Certificate in Fine Art (Certificat d'Etudes d'Arts Plastiques, CEAP), these allowed La Reunion students to pursue their third year of training in the various art schools in mainland France. The same year, an agreement was signed with the University of Aix-en-Provence, allowing CEAP qualified students of the school to have exemption from General Academic Studies Degree (Diplôme d'Etudes Universitaires Générales, DEUG) and enroll directly in a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

In 1997, Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion obtained its own license to provide courses to a three year degree (Bac + 3), the National Degree in Fine Arts (Diplôme National d'Arts Plastiques, DNAP) in Communication.

In 2003, following an evaluation by MIPEA (Permanent Mission of inspection, consulting and evaluation of the Ministry of Culture), Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion obtained authorization for courses in two new qualifications complementing the existing three year degree: the National Degree in Fine Arts (DNAP) in Art and in Design. For a four and five year degree (Bac + 4 and Bac + 5), the school obtained authorization for the Higher National Diploma in Plastic Expression (Diplôme National Supérieur d'Expression Plastique, DNSEP) in Art, option "landscapes".

Located in Le Port, Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion has since 1991 shared its facilities with the Institute of Image of the Indian Ocean (ILOI) and the Cultural Center "Village Titan". In the academic year 2002-2003, the School of Architecture helped create eye catching new buildings designed and drawn by "Architecture Studio". They are located across from the multimedia library Benoîte Boulard and the Le Port Bus Station.

Since 2004, Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion has worked on implementing the Bachelor-Master-Doctorate system (L.M.D.). The school has a research platform focusing on issues of "landscape" in the broad sense of the term (natural, virtual, human, urban, technical, artistic...). This platform, aimed at both research and creation, allows the participation of young artists, scholars and researchers in post-graduate, doctoral or even postdoctoral studies. This project assimilates academics and creative artists and is carried out in close collaboration with partners local, national and international from the world of economics, science and academics.

Since 2007, Ecole Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion has been a permanent member of the organisation AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie) which has 635 members globally.

In 2011, the school has been made a Public Institution of Cultural Cooperation (EPCC).

In 2012, it signed the Erasmus University Charter (EUC).
